A Cottage on the Oregon Coast
A Cottage on the Oregon Coast
The rain slanted and the wind blew
so hard we had to bend in half in order
to forge ahead up-right
The sea roared on those nights
The apples plopped to the ground
and the figs into our hands with their moist
pink hearts like the seashells we scooped
off the sand. The daybreak glittered and
the clouds skittered back to the horizon
and there was a day to walk to the
beach. I knelt by the window
drunk with brandy and shame because
I didnt love you, didnt love being
there, didnt know the pearl of
time had been gifted me. I knelt
by the window sill and threw up
into the blackberry bushes, threw up
passionate kisses by the hissing
green fire in the wood stove
threw up being held tightly threw up the
long murmur of words
in a reverent quiet. The kids took me
to the swings by the library the
next day, splashing through
puddles in boots one size too big,
bought second hand but in good
enough condition like my soul
open to the possibility
of awe. The waves danced to
the tune of the moon as they
smashed against rocks
as stern and unyielding as my
inner voice. To lay aside my doubts
meant to be as free as my children
riding their trikes back
and forth, back and forth
over the graveled driveway.
Someday I would stand at the
turning point and let go, someday
I would know how to spin
straw into gold.
