THE COAST GUARD

To Daddy
Who served his country,
Who wanted to be a glider pilot,
But who found a spot in
The coast guard that needed him.
To Daddy
A handsome young veteran
Of a war against a principle
Of cruelty.
To Daddy, who fought for right
And became a lawyer
To help give justice substance.
And realized that it was expedient.
And realized that maybe what
He was fighting for, whenever he went to war
Against whoever and whatever,
Was not a far-off principle,
But that his family would stay free.
To Daddy who let us be free
In spite of ourselves.
